If a piece of jade looks completely flawless—perfectly even color, glassy shine, not a single natural mark—that's worth a second look, not an instant yes. Nature rarely polishes a gemstone that evenly. Jade that looks too perfect usually got that way in a lab, not in the ground.
That's the world of treated jade: Jadeite that's been chemically bleached, filled, or dyed to imitate the color and clarity that top-quality natural jade develops entirely on its own. In the trade it's labeled Type B, Type C, or B+C, and it's sold everywhere from Mandalay's markets to online storefronts—sometimes disclosed honestly, sometimes not. Here's exactly what happens to jade during treatment, what it costs you as a buyer, and how to tell the difference before you pay for manufactured permanence.
Type A, B, and C—What the Letters Actually Mean
The jade trade uses a simple letter system—Type A, Type B, Type C, and Type B+C—to describe how much has been done to a stone after it's cut from the rock:
Type A—Cut and polished, nothing else. The only thing that might touch it is a thin coat of wax to fill microscopic surface pores, which is a finishing step, not a significant treatment. Every bit of the color and translucency is exactly what formed underground.
Type B—Often called “B jade,” and sometimes described less precisely as “Grade B jade.” Stained or discolored Jadeite is submerged in an acid bath that removes brown and gray iron-bearing compounds from fractures and grain boundaries. It is then impregnated with clear polymer resin to fill the spaces left behind and improve strength and shine.
Type C—Jadeite that's been dyed to add or intensify color. Because Jadeite is naturally porous, dye seeps into the tiny gaps between mineral grains, which is also part of why it doesn't always stay put.
Type B+C—Both treatments combined: bleached, resin-filled, and dyed. This is the most heavily processed Jadeite still sold under the name “jade,” and the version most likely to be passed off as a natural, high-quality stone.
None of this is automatically fraud—Type B and C jade has been sold openly in the trade for decades, and gemologists have been documenting the treatment process since at least the early 1990s. The problem starts when a seller doesn't disclose it and prices a treated stone as if it were Type A.

What Treatment Actually Does to the Stone
It Makes the Stone Structurally Weaker—Permanently
This is the part most buyers never hear: the acid bath used for Type B jade removes iron-bearing compounds from fractures and grain boundaries. In doing so, it can leave the material slightly porous and more susceptible to breakage along existing fractures. Polymer impregnation fills those opened spaces and restores some strength and shine, but it does not return the material to its original untreated state.

The Color Doesn't Always Stay Put
Dye and resin both age in ways that natural color doesn't. Polymer resin can gradually yellow under UV light or develop hairline cracks as it expands and contracts with temperature changes over the years. Dye can fade or shift, especially with regular light exposure, since it's sitting in the stone's pores rather than being part of the mineral itself. A piece that looks vividly green in the shop can look noticeably duller, or faintly yellow, a decade later. It's Worth a Fraction of What It's Priced At
Type A jade holds value because the material is genuinely scarce and stable indefinitely. Treated jade starts lower and tends to drop further, since its main selling point—enhanced color and clarity—is exactly the part most likely to degrade. If you're buying jade as an investment or a piece to hand down, it needs to actually survive being one, and Type B or C jade wasn't built for that job. The gap between “looks the same” and “is the same” is enormous here—it just doesn't show up until years later, usually right when resale or appraisal is the point.
The Production Process Has a Real Cost
The “ethical” concern with treated jade isn't really about the finished piece sitting on your hand—it's about how it gets there. Rough stones can sit in heated acid baths for days or weeks, and the fumes involved are genuinely hazardous to the people handling them. This isn't a gentle enhancement; it's industrial-scale chemical processing, often done with limited oversight. How to Tell If Jade Has Been Treated
Here's the uncomfortable truth: you usually can't tell just by looking, and neither can most jewelers. Standard gemological tests like refractive index and specific gravity are often unchanged or barely changed by treatment, and testing hardness means damaging the stone to check it. Even experienced dealers will say eyeballing a piece isn't reliable on its own.
What actually works:
A certificate from a gemological laboratory—not the seller—should state the treatment type. Infrared spectroscopy can detect polymer resin that may otherwise be invisible.
Reputable dealers disclose Type B or C status upfront. A seller who stays vague or refuses to put it on paper is creating unnecessary risk.
Flawless, ultra-uniform color across an entire piece is more consistent with dye than with nature. Genuine Type A Jadeite usually shows some natural variation.
A large, vivid, highly translucent piece priced far below comparable Type A Jadeite deserves additional scrutiny.

Is Treated Jade Ever Worth Buying?
There's a legitimate place for it: as inexpensive costume jewelry, sold honestly as such. Buying Type B or C jade because you like how it looks, at a price that reflects what it actually is, isn't a mistake. The mistake is paying Type A prices for it, or buying it expecting the color and structure to last.
If you want jade as fashion, know what you're getting, and treatment isn't automatically a dealbreaker. If you want jade that holds its color, its structure, and its value for decades or generations, Type A is the only type actually built for that.
Common Questions About Treated Jade
Is treated jade “fake” jade?
No. Type B and C jade is still genuine Jadeite, just chemically altered after mining. It's a real mineral, not a simulant like glass or plastic. The issue is that its structure and color have been artificially changed, often without the buyer being told.
Can you tell treated jade apart from natural jade just by looking at it?
Not reliably, even for experienced buyers. The most consistent method is a lab certificate based on infrared spectroscopy, the test most capable of detecting polymer resin in a stone.
Does treated jade lose its color over time?
